‘Tea with Nanna’ weaves together a lovely story of interconnectedness in this time of distance and isolation. Through an unlikely series of events, Sarah May, owner of ‘Her Name was Nola’, a beautifully curated store in South Australia with a cult following, purchased a painting of mine that was created for a charity show, supporting survivors of Domestic Violence.

We connected online over the sale of the piece and have been following each others journeys through the wonder of Instagram. Sarah posted the reference photo for this work on her stories and it captured my imagination immediately. She was kind enough to allow me to paint it. It was only after I finished and sent her the final images that she told me the work features a tea cup and saucer that belonged to her grandmother, who had passed away just a few days earlier. The timing was synchronistic, and a beautiful archival print of this now hangs on her wall.

For me this painting symbolises so much about our interconnectedness in the time of Covid, and how the digital age allows us to reach people in new and exciting ways. Chance encounters have always had the ability to change our lives, and this continues despite the limitations of being physically distanced from one another.
