Artist Statement

Growing up on 40 acres of bushland sparked an early interest in plants and flowers.  From the handfuls of wildflowers we would bring home to my Mum after a day playing in the bush, to the gardens full of fruit and vegetables my parents grew, I was always surrounded by nature’s bounty. These bounties found their way into my earliest sketchbooks and diaries, and unsurprisingly resurfaced as my muse when I returned to painting later in life.

Light plays an important role in my art.  It is in the intersection of nature and light that I feel hope and a reverence for all living things.  Amid the chaos and noise of everyday life, nature offers solace and calm, as does the process of painting itself.

The mechanics of life and nature; how the capillaries of a leaf explode into view when backlit, fascinate me. When this happens, suddenly a network of superhighways, a hidden world within a world is  uncovered.   To me these highlights how blinkered our own field of view can become. How closed we often are to the simple wonder of the world around us.

‘Each of my paintings are a love note, to the wonder and joy of the often overlooked, to the simplicity and perseverance of mother nature.’

I hope they act as a reminder to find the joy in the small quiet moments this life offers us.
